Guidelines for Defenses
Preparing the final text
Once having been approved in the Qualifying Exam or Master's Defense, and after making the corrections required by the committee, the student must follow the procedures below to finalize their text. Pay close attention to this stage, as it is the main cause of delays in completing the works.
QUALIFYING EXAM
- textual elements to be excluded: exclude from the final text the following sections and parts: Work Identification Sheet; Supervisor and Examining Committee Sheets; Dedication; Epigraph and Acknowledgments. They are unnecessary for the Qualifying Exam;
- The final text must contain the following elements, in order:
- cover and title page;
- Defense Minutes filled out, signed by all members and digitized (in the place where the Supervisor and Examining Committee Sheets are);
- Remaining sections of the Qualification Exam text;
- The student must generate the file in PDF/A, as below;
- The student must submit the exam text according to the guidelines in "Submitting the final text". ATTENTION: the "Supervisor's Approval" is not necessary to submit the final version of the Qualifying Exam (skip directly to the "Submitting the final text" step!)
MASTER'S DISSERTATION
- The final text must contain ALL basic textual elements, according to BU regulations, and others suggested by the committee;
- The student must generate the Work Identification Sheet, already with the final title, and include it in the proper place;
- The student must generate the file in PDF/A, as below;
- Once this step is done, the student must submit the final version to their supervisor.
FILE CONVERSION TO PDF/A
PDF/A is a PDF file format for long-term storage, incorporating in the file all metadata and original fonts. This allows files to be opened 20 or 30 years from now, regardless of future advances and updates to these fonts. It is, therefore, a 100% self-contained document. This format is mandatory for depositing theses, dissertations and qualifying exams at UFSC. To convert a given file to PDF/A, follow one of the procedures:
- Converting PDF files to PDF/A: use this BU application;
- Converting .doc .docx files to PDF/A: use these procedures informed by BU.
